While acing every class has always been a top priority, many kids are just as obsessed with the subject of style. Back-to-school wardrobes may not be as elementary as they used to be, but this fall’s kids’ style trends make it a breeze to earn an A+ in fashion. These five cool fashion trends for fall are plucked straight from the runways for the playgrounds.

Blast From the Past

Grunge and the ’70s made a big comeback on the runways, and these throwback trends look just as cool in the classroom. Slightly distressed denim brings an edgy touch without looking too disheveled, while retro pieces—think classic band tees, modern flared jeans, vintage-inspired jackets, and cool leather boots—channel the past in kids’ style without looking outdated.

Cool Cats

Graphic tees have always been a top pick, but this fall is focused on going beyond the usual branded tee with a graphic top emblazoned cool animal prints—that is to say, prints of animals looking cool. Funny tops with leopards in neon sunglasses, for example, offer an effortless and stylish way to add this trend into your kid’s wardrobe.

Statement Socks

While our childhood sock drawers used to be the least exciting corner of the wardrobe, what your kid wears on their feet can be as much of a stylish statement-maker as their tee. Today’s socks are all about expressing personality, whether it’s a tried-and-true argyle pair, a fun polka dot print, or a bold pattern that shows off your kid’s favorite things.

Mix-and-Match Prints

Kids’ style is notorious for forgetting all about fashion faux pas (hello, Halloween costumes as everyday threads), so make the most of the trend this fall by mixing and matching prints. Keep in mind, though, that there is a method to the sartorial madness. To keep your pint-sized style star’s printastic outfit from looking like a mess, limit them to a complementary color scheme and similar print styles, or break up printed pieces with neutrals. For boys, Vince’s blue and white striped pullover sweater with a color-blocked navy and white tee would pair perfectly with gray pants.
