5 Cool Bedroom Design Ideas for Kids

By Christina Montoya Fiedler

The design of your kid’s room should be a lot of fun. It’s the place in your house where they will feel safe and cozy, but it should also be the place where they will play, learn, and grow as they get older. So when you’re thinking of new bedroom design ideas, there are so many directions you can go based on your child’s personality. You can add a canvas for your budding artist, a reading nook for your bookworm, or a comfy accent chair for your teen. Here are five bedroom designs for kids to jazz up their space.

1. The Writing on the Wall

Everyone knows kids love to draw on the walls, so why not encourage it? Forget about regular paint and create a feature wall in your child’s bedroom using chalkboard paint. It’s an easy project that packs a big punch. It should take just a day to complete, including dry time. When your child is young, they can use it to doodle the day away. As they get older, they can use it to keep schedules and write notes.

2. Book Nook

A reading nook is a great addition to any room that will grow with your child as they move from board books to chapter books. Pick a cozy spot and plop down a few colorful and comfy throw pillows that suit their personality and spur their creativity for the ultimate reading nook. You should also make sure they have a good source of light. A set of stackable light blocks will add to the overall design aesthetic and enable your child to curl up with a good book whenever they wish.

3. Colorful Accents

Designing your kid’s room with white walls allows you to add accents of colors throughout the room. This could come through artwork or a fun rug. Likewise, a colorful accent chair is great for laying out your child’s clothes in the morning, or snuggling into a bedtime story. But as they get older, it’s a great addition to their reading nook, or a nice spot to relax after a long day.

4. Bedding Through the Ages

New bedding is the quickest way to refresh any room. Sheets, shams, comforters, throw blankets, and bed skirts take a plain bed from dull to dynamite in no time flat. When your child is young, they’ll most likely gravitate toward something cuter. A tween may go for bright patterns, and a high-schooler may like something more muted.

5. Smart Lighting

Every room needs great lighting, and smart lighting will not only save you on your electricity bill, but it will also inspire your technology-adept child to make good choices. A smart dimmer for your kids’ rooms lets them control their lighting from a smartphone. If they’ve forgotten to turn out the lights before leaving the house, they can do it remotely. You can also share control, and literally determine when it’s time for lights-out! The best bedroom ideas are the ones that enhance their lives in many ways.
