Throw a “Conventional” Political Party

in EXPERIENCES

By Jae Curtis

You’ve heard of Oscar parties, and to-do’s to fête the Super Bowl—so why wouldn’t you celebrate events that rock the entire nation every four years?

The Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention are slated for this summer, so what better way to get your civic-minded friends together than to throw a political party (or two!)? No matter whom you plan on voting for this fall, you can gather friends and family to watch all the excitement, eat some great food, and even participate in activities of which Uncle Sam would be proud. Here’s what you’ll need:

Themed Decor

Since both national conventions are being held after the Fourth of July, you should have no trouble finding America-themed decor items to help give your home a patriotic overhaul.

Try putting up American Flag LED Lights or printed posters of the iconic donkeys and elephants, using the traditional red, white, and blue hues as a backdrop for your political party. A couple of red and blue tablecloths can effortlessly transform your dining room or backyard, and can even be hung from the ceiling to create traditional bunting for even more American ambiance.

Unique Food and Drinks

Hey, it’s not a party unless guests have something to nibble on during the festivities, right? As the presidential nominee is announced, you can serve up traditionally American snacks, like mini corn dogs with dipping sauces, packets of peanuts (add in candy and raisins and call it “Campaign Trail Mix”), and apple pie.

Make sure you also have a signature drink: For a Democratic bash, tint drinks with blue curaçao, and for the Republican convention, keep cranberry juice on hand for red cocktails.

Affiliated Activities

Obviously, watching the convention with your friends will be the headlining activity for your political party bash, so make sure you have adequate viewing space. A Samsung 65″ Curved 4K TV ensures that every one of your friends will get a front row-seat for all the festivities. Or, you could opt for a projector, so you can live-stream the convention from the Internet onto any flat surface (such as a wall) for an even larger viewing area.

Watching the national conventions isn’t the only way you can celebrate your own political event: try challenging everyone to draw a caricature of the nominee, or play a trivia game to get to know them a little better. You can add fun prizes to the mix, too. A pair of novelty Patriotic Cuff Links for men and an American Flag Neck Scarf for the women means your guests will play to win at the party.

Celebrating the national conventions means supporting your political party and inviting your friends to do the same. As Election Night approaches, you can relieve some of the strain that politics can put on friendships by hosting a party that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or somewhere in between, your affiliated political party can be the springboard for your next big event.
